Fort Mohave couple worried about losing home to flooding

FT. MOHAVE, Ariz. – Elvis and Zandrea Henneger say they have sustained almost $300,000 in damages to their home from the past three storms that caused flooding all around their home.

“Most of that has been out of our pockets,” Zandrea said.

She said after they filed the third insurance claim, their home insurance policy was cancelled, but they’re paying flood insurance because their home is in a flood zone.

A big slab of their patio was broken off from flood waters racing over it from a previous storm and flood. It also left several cracks in the rest of it and appears more will break off. There’s also a cracked tile floor in their living room, left when four feet of water rushed through the inside of their home.

They’ve had mold and lived for a while without two walls, and she said her children were horribly afraid.

“We have four children,” Zandrea said. “Our 10-year-old son is afraid to sleep in his room. He wants to sleep with us. I try to stay strong for our children,” Zandrea said, eyes welling with tears, “but it’s hard. It’s hard for me to tell them it’s going to be okay when I don’t know if it’s going to be okay.”

She said the flood waters from the three past storms have washed away dirt out from under their home and she’s so afraid the next one will wash it off its foundation and wash it away.

“My husband built this with his bare hands. We’ve lived here 20 years and are raising our family here. Where will we go if our home is destroyed? This flooding never happened until they put in the new road.”

She pled her case to the Mohave County Board of Supervisors last week during the Call to the Public.

Zandrea said that a county work crew came out the following day to assess the problem.

“I appreciate what they’re doing,” Zandrea said. “I hope it helps.”

In the meantime, she and others are praying the heavy rains bypass Fort Mohave so she can keep her home just a little bit longer.
