I, for one, appreciate The Standard’s policy of printing letters from readers who want to express their opinions on varying subjects. It is also wise to include your disclaimer that views are not necessarily those of The Standard.
That said, I found Sen. Allen’s letter from the May 6 edition amusing and quite questionable when she writes, “I am also concerned with the low-income students who are attending our state’s private schools.” I wonder how many low-income families can afford private learning institutions for their children.
Then there is the letter writer who opines as she, “understands it, under crisis conditions both the current president and vice president are out and the Speaker of the House becomes president until a new election is held.” This leaves me wondering if Pelosi could possibly muck it up more than the current king has managed in three years?
The $25 million, in question, presumably for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, from another writer, is not only funded by a House sub committee but private donations as well. It is treated as a federal sector employer which is in part funded by federal dollars.
Pelosi’s and Democrats’ efforts to keep dollars from going into the private bank accounts of corporate honchos is admirable even after they pushed for oversight. Still, we have to wonder how companies like AHT, Ruth Chris, Shake Shack, DMC Global, Auto Nation and Sports venues were given Paycheck Protection Program funds in the first place, even though the funds were returned. Talk about cleaning out the swamp!
The most amusing item had to be the quip about the lack of toilet paper, blamed on President Trump.
