Ann was born in 1938 in the small upstate town of New York, called Newburgh, near West Point on the Hudson River. Her mother—one of ten children in the Cavanaugh family—had little interest in raising the family. Her father went to war and when he returned, he soon deserted them.  Ann was the oldest so the matter of her brother and sister’s upbringing was left to her.
