ADOT Reminder: No closures over Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 22-27)

If you are among the many drivers who will be taking to the highway over Thanksgiving weekend, the Arizona Department of Transportation is working to ease the travel stress. ADOT and its contractors will not schedule any full construction or maintenance closures on state highways, including Phoenix-area freeways, from Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 22, to Monday morning, Nov. 27, to help limit impacts on holiday travel. Drivers should prepare for their trips ahead of time and “expect the unexpected” while focusing on safe driving, being patient and alert when on the road. You should get adequate rest, always buckle up, obey…

AZGFD asks hunters to help keep Chronic Wasting Disease at bay

PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) is asking hunters to continue doing their part to help keep Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) at bay. CWD is a fatal wildlife disease that affects the nervous system of deer and elk.  All successful deer and elk hunters are encouraged to bring the head of their harvested animal — especially bucks and bulls — to any department office statewide between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The department is requesting that hunters call in advance before delivering a head for sampling.  The preferred method for storage is to place the head…

Capitol rioter plans 2024 run as a Libertarian candidate in Arizona’s 8th congressional district

PHOENIX (AP) – Jacob Chansley, the spear-carrying rioter whose horned fur hat, bare chest and face paint made him one of the more recognizable figures in the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, apparently aspires to be a member of Congress. Online paperwork shows the 35-year-old Chansley filed a candidate statement of interest Thursday, indicating he wants to run as a Libertarian in next year’s election for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District seat. U.S. Rep. Debbie Lesko, a 64-year-old Republican representing the district since 2018, announced last month that she won’t seek re-election. Her term officially ends in January…

‘Thanksgiving Grandma’ teams up with Airbnb to welcome strangers for the holiday

PHOENIX (AP) – An Arizona woman who shared her Thanksgiving table seven years ago with a stranger she accidentally texted will be opening up her home again this year to two new strangers. Wanda Dench is teaming up with Airbnb to expand the festivities, and the company said it will make a donation to the relief organization Feeding America. Dench’s tradition began in 2016 with a mistaken text to then-teen Jamal Hinton. She was trying to invite her grandson but didn’t realize he had changed his phone number. Hinton jokingly replied he would like to come and Dench said he…
