KINGMAN – A Kingman woman was killed because she already had custody of one of her daughter’s children and threatened to take custody of her unborn son. Admissions defendants made in the murder of Shawn Vanover, 62, were detailed Wednesday in Mohave County Superior Court. Mark Baldonado, 32, pleaded guilty to first degree murder. He must serve at least 25 years in prison when sentenced June 5. Prosecutor Jacob Cote said Carrie Vanover, 21, was pregnant when she and Baldonado conspired to kill her mother to prevent her from taking custody of their son. MOHAVE COUNTY – The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office would like to inform the community of a scam that has increased in popularity recently. Over the course of six weeks, they have received four calls of citizens being scammed out of money after attempting to purchase an animal over the internet. Three of these scams have taken place in the last two weeks. The victims all claim they attempted to purchase a pet (two dog incidents and two cat incidents) on various pet adoption websites across the country. The victims were contacted by the “seller” and told to pay various amounts…
One man shot and killed his boyfriend in north Kingman early Monday. The Mohave County sheriff’s office has provided further details of the violence that unfolded at the suspect’s home in the 900 block of John Norman Ln. Spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said the victim, Christopher Young, 30, had moved in with Christopher Kacos, 33, about a month ago. A female neighbor knocked on their door at 2:41 a.m to complain about loud music coming from the home. “Young became aggressive and started hitting her over the head,” Mortensen said. Kacos told responding deputies that Young ran off into the desert….
KINGMAN – An alleged child abductor babbled biblically during an extradition hearing before a Kingman judge last week. Judge Billy Sipe ended the hearing without getting Dustin Messner, 37, to waive extradition to return to California. Messner allegedly kidnapped his eight-year-old son in Stockton in early April before the boy was rescued and he was arrested at his property in Golden Valley. Messner told Judge Sipe last Thursday that he wasn’t bound by Arizona or Mohave County law and that he only followed the law of God. A Governor’s warrant will be used to return Messner to California for prosecution.
KINGMAN – A shooting death early Monday, May 4 in north Kingman is under investigation by the Mohave County Sheriff’s office. Deputies responded at 4:47 a.m. to a report that multiple gunshots were fired in the vicinity of a home in the 900 block of John Norman Ln. “Deputies arrived on scene and observed a male subject deceased in the roadway with three gunshot wounds to the head, neck, and face,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Anita Mortensen. “A shotgun and three spent shotgun shells were located near the victim’s body.” Mortensen said deputies observed Christopher Robin Kacos, 33 of Kingman, on the property….
