MEC passes additional savings to members

BULLHEAD CITY – Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) has been serving members for 75 years, and unlike most items over time, the cost of MEC’s electricity has stayed relatively the same since inception. Unlike investor-owned utilities who provide profits to shareholders, a utility operating under the cooperative model is a not-for-profit entity structured to provide its member-owners with exceptional service at cost. This year, Mohave Electric successfully secured power purchases at a lower cost than anticipated. These savings will be shared with members, and on August 19, 2021, the MEC Board of Directors unanimously voted to increase the Purchased Power Adjustor (PPA) credit to…

Concern mounts over County personnel vacancies and ARPA spending

MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave County, like so many enterprises in the private sector, continues struggling to fill employment vacancies. County Manager Sam Elters told the Board of Supervisors Monday that vacancies across the county workforce now total 127 positions. Two key personnel are working month to month after previously indicating desire and intent to move on. Library District Director Kathy Pennell tendered her retirement related resignation last spring but has stayed the course while the county continues seeking her successor. Dr. Archiaus Mosely did not want to extend his contract as Mohave County Medical Examiner when it expired in June,…

Downtown purchase approved

KINGMAN – It was used as a grocery store by the Forsythe family and then converted to a Safeway decades ago. More recently, the 18,000 sq. ft. building provided office space for dozens of state employees who’ve relocated to new digs on Airway Avenue. And now, the old DHS building at 519 Beale St. in downtown Kingman will be purchased by the city to house a museum for electric vehicles. The city council voted Tuesday to approve a staff request to use $875,000 in federal funds to acquire the building and associated ample parking space on the property. City Manager…

Boyd selected for BCSD vacancy

BULLHEAD CITY – The Bullhead City School District (BCSD) governing board is recommending long-time resident Anna Boyd to fill a school board vacancy created by the resignation of member Brandee Dubois, who stepped down in July.  Boyd is a math teacher at Mohave High School. A formal appointment will then be made by Mohave County School Superintendent Mike File.  Under state law, File has the right to accept or reject a board’s recommendation, or unilaterally name his own appointee. Because a vacancy is being filled, that seat will be up for election next year (2022) rather than at the end…
