Fishing for Smiles produces big smiles

KINGMAN – There were plenty of smiles and plenty of fishing to go around at the annual Fishing for Smiles event for the Mohave County special needs community on Tuesday, May 21.  It was categorized as “catch and release” day. The fishing took place at a pond on the Dunton Ranch Fort Rock located just off of I-40 east. The Dunton family makes the pond available each year for the event at no charge….

Lake Havasu celebrated heroic veterans

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Last week and Monday, Lake Havasu honored our Veterans with various Memorial Day activities that occurred around town. Havasu Community Health Foundation’s Dementia Connection hosted an Honoring Our Veterans lunch that took place Thursday, May 23 at the Memory Cafe. The Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post honored Veterans with their Memorial Day event held on Monday, May 27 at Wheeler Park.   The Dementia Connection of Havasu was developed under the umbrella of the Havasu Community Health Foundation. They are a nonprofit group of volunteers whose mission is to raise awareness and give support systems to those suffering from the illness along with…

Veterans Day Vs. Memorial Day

Veterans Day, was first called Armistice Day and was dedicated to those who fought in WWI (1914 – 1918) which official ended on November 11, 1918. It ended on the 11th month, of the 11th day at the 11th hour, when a temporary cessation of hostilities was called between the warring nations. As time went on it became known as Veterans Day and in the US it was meant to honor all veterans who served in the armed forces as well as those killed in action. It became an official US holiday and in 1975 President Gerald Ford made it official by setting the date as November 11th.  Veterans Day is different because it is meant to honor all veterans were Memorial day is meant to honor those who died in war.
