LAKE HAVASU CITY – Cancer Care Resource and Michael Alan Furnishings are bringing breast cancer awareness to the community again this year with two different annual fundraisers. Over the weekend, Cancer Care Resource held Havasu’s annual breast cancer awareness walk on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. under the London Bridge Stage.

Cancer Care Resource operates under the Heidi Edwards Cooking for Cancer nonprofit. They raise funds to help cancer patients by partnering up with local restaurants that assist with their ongoing fundraisers.

Saturday was filled with Havasu businesses, community leaders, and residents all decked out in pink T-shirts to show their support. The honoree showcased at the start of the event was Havasu Health Foundation’s Arlene Polster.

Polster is the founder of Bosom Buddies support group. A group designed for patients and healthcare workers that meet the first Wednesday of every month at 4 p.m. at Havasu Community Health Foundation.

Polster lost her battle with cancer in 2019, and Cancer Care Resource and Havasu Health Foundation shared that Polster’s impact will always be remembered. Admission for the event was $20 per person and there were no fees for survivors of cancer to participate.

T-shirts were also available for purchase at just $15. If you missed this year’s walk, there is still another opportunity to give your contributions for the fight against breast cancer. Michael Alan Furnishings will be hosting their 16th Annual Sleepless in Havasu fundraiser.

Throughout the years, the store has raised over $480.000 to help with breast cancer prevention.  Mayor Sheehy will open the event along with volunteers.

This is a 24-hour fundraiser where volunteers stay for the full 24-hour event to help raise money. Local cancer survivors announce how much was raised after the fundraiser has ended.

There are two options to make a donation. You can make a check payable to the Cancer Association of Havasu and drop them off at Michael Alan or by visiting their pledge website at michaelalanaz.com.

The Michael Alan Furnishings Sleepless In Havasu fundraising event will begin on Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 a.m. and will end on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 6 a.m. There will also be a kickoff party that is free and open to the public on Friday, starting at 5 p.m.

Attendees will be able to vote on beds and bid on silent auction items. Both events will take place at Michael Alan Furnishing store located at 2010 Acoma Blvd W.

All proceeds for the breast cancer awareness walk went to Cancer Care Resource programs, education and support groups. Proceeds of this year’s Sleepless in Havasu will go to bringing an onsite mobile mammography van to Michael Alan for ongoing screenings throughout the year.

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the furniture store will be providing mobile mammogram screenings on Monday, Oct. 7 beginning at 10 a.m. at Michael Alan Furnishings. Both fundraisers encourage early detection screenings, which equates to early interventions and treatments.
