Bad driving behavior addressed at LHC city council

Crack seal work and behavior –

LAKE HAVASU CITY – As Lake Havasu City Council members OK’d a contract for what is routine crack seal and mastic work on city streets at a recent meeting, the need for better traffic controls and more patience from motorists was highlighted in conjunction with the work.

Specifically, Councilmembers Jim Dolan and Nancy Campbell questioned whether the city has made improvements, consulted with the police department and planned for better notification on the streets for the roadwork ahead.

“The last couple of years it’s just been chaotic,” Dolan said of some of the contracted street work. There has been traffic narrowed down to two lanes and “all of the sudden” a truck is backing up, people running red lights and motorists and workers flipping each other off, he added.

“We’ve had a driver jump out of their car and punch one of our (roadwork) employees and keep going,” Campbell said. The need for patience is vital because the result of the work is improved roads, she added.

City Manager Jess Knudson assured councilmembers that efforts have been made to improve on traffic controls during the roadwork.

“There’s room for us to improve and we’ll continue to improve,” Knudson said.

The city unanimously approved a contract with Graham Contractors, Inc. of San Jose, California to do crack seal and mastic work on between 150 and 180 lane miles of Havasu roads for $699,458.
