Police identify killer in 1987 cold case on hiking trail

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) – A young college student who was brutally killed on a Prescott hiking trail decades ago was the victim of a serial predator who took his own life years later, authorities said Friday. Yavapai County Sheriff David Rhodes announced at a news conference that DNA evidence indicates Bryan Scott Bennett was the man responsible for 23-year-old Catherine “Cathy” Sposito’s 1987 death. In November 2022, authorities had the body of Bennett, who killed himself in 1994, exhumed. It wasn’t until March that investigators confirmed DNA on a wrench used in the slaying belonged to him. Hiker Fatality near Cottonwood Campground along North Kaibab Trail

GRAND CANYON, Ariz.—On September 9 at approximately 1:55 p.m., the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received an emergency call of a hiker in distress on the North Kaibab Trail approximately one mile south of Cottonwood Campground. Soon thereafter the hiker became unresponsive and bystanders initiated CPR.  National Park Service (NPS) search and rescue personnel responded to the call via helicopter. Given the location, specialized helicopter maneuvers were employed to allow rangers to assume care of the hiker, initiating advance life support efforts.  Attempts to resuscitate the hiker were unsuccessful. On January 14, 1961 a bright light entered the world and on September 1, 2023 it was extinguished.   Karen Suzanne Miller was raised in Simi Valley, California as the youngest to Bob and Jan. She was often teased by Keith, Kim and Steve, her siblings.  Karen was on the volleyball and track teams in high school and she studied to be an Xray technician in California.
