Arraignment continued in Kingman Walgreens road rage case

Interior of courtroom

KINGMAN — Arraignment was continued Tuesday for one local man charged in the shooting of another in the Walgreen’s parking lot at one of the busiest intersections in the community of Kingman.

Public Defender Paul Amann was present to assist in the proceeding, but Nils Peters, 69, informed Judge Billy Sipe that he preferred to wait until his newly retained private counsel could attend and represent him. He said he had hired Jason D. Lamm of Phoenix.

“I sent him $50,000,” Peters said, though the Court had not yet received a notice of appearance of counsel from Lamm. With no objection from the state, Judge Sipe continued the arraignment until Monday, June 2.

Peters is charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault for the May 7 road rage related encounter.

Deputy Kingman police chief Joel Freed said perceived erratic driving behavior prompted hostility between Peters and the 73-year-old shooting victim. He said the beef between the motorists began on Hualapai Mountain Road with both vehicles turning left on Andy Devine Avenue toward downtown Kingman before they swung behind the Walgreen’s and around to their front parking lot, south of 66 Auto Sales.

Freed said the combatants argued before Nils shot the other man, fled in his Ford Flex and was quickly arrested in a traffic stop by an officer who just happened to be close by. Freed said the victim who was discharged from the hospital at some point after being treated for his injuries.
