Tariffs and trade deficits

letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

Logic tells us that tariffs can be applied in a fair manner so all partners can prosper and lower or eliminate huge trade deficits. Unfortunately the United States is stuck with huge trade deficits as our tariffs are extremely low on foreign goods compared to U.S. goods being levied extremely high tariffs entering foreign countries.

Many big businesses, politicians, with the help of lobbyists have been selling the United States out for decades. It’s time to stop subsidizing the rest of the world!

The point I was making to Mr. Walter was:”Instant gratification” is only temporary. Relief will not happen overnight until we can secure fair trade deals after decades of neglect. At least inflation is slowing which is a relief.

Whether we are still working or not we must use our ingenuity until we get through this. The same companies that say they will have to raise prices are the same ones selling cheap Chinese and foreign goods to boost their bottom line.

Your Dad was right in that “We can’t predict the future” but we must try for a better life for our future generations!
