KINGMAN – Married tourists from Hong Kong, China were injured when a large rock slammed through the windshield of their rental vehicle as they entered the city of Kingman Monday morning.
Deputy police chief Joel Freed said they were southbound and motoring through Coyote Pass on U.S. 93 when a boulder dislodged from construction activity associated with the new free-flow highway 93/Interstate 40 traffic interchange.
Freed said a heavy equipment operator and others witnessed the large boulder descend from the hill to the highway.
“It tumbled quite a way. It’s actually a splinter off a larger boulder,” Freed said. He said the falling boulder slammed into another large boulder, before the splintered basketball-sized, 150- pound rock crashed through the windshield. He said the rock slid between the 32-year-old driver and his 28-year-old wife and shattered the rear windshield before coming to rest in the back seat.
The male was treated for lacerations from the shattered glass. The passenger suffered a large laceration above her eye and a fractured skull and was in serious condition following transport to a Las Vegas hospital.
Freed said investigation continues and that no citations have been issued.
