BCSD board vacancy applications open

BULLHEAD CITY – Applications are scheduled to close Friday, January 3, for those interested in filling a vacancy on the Bullhead City School District (BCSD) governing board.  The opening was created by the resignation of member Dr. Sheila Barnett, whose new legal residence is just outside the district boundaries.  Her resignation was effective in September.

Rather than recommend a short appointment until the end of 2024, when Barnett’s term expires, the BCSD governing board opted to open applications in December and interview interested applicants in January, with a recommended appointment at that time.  The non-partisan seat will then be on the 2026 ballot during the next election.

BCSD’s school board may recommend its newest member at its January 9 meeting, which is open to the public.  A formal appointment will be made by incoming Mohave County School Superintendent John Warren.  Under Arizona law, Warren has the right to accept or reject a board’s recommendation, or unilaterally name his own appointee.

School board members are responsible for setting policies and goals, reviewing and approving budgets, and hiring and evaluating the superintendent.  They do not receive a salary or stipend for monthly meetings, periodic student disciplinary or personnel hearings, or workshops.

Board members may choose to interview candidates in open session during the January 9 meeting, which begins at 6:00 p.m.  Applicants should attend the meeting.  The person selected or approved by Warren will take office following a formal decision and appointment.

Interested candidates who meet the legal requirements should submit letters of interest to the school district offices at 1004 Hancock Road, Building 100, in Bullhead City.  They may also be emailed to bcsdboard@bcsd15.org .  According to state law, potential candidates must be registered voters who have lived within the District’s boundaries at least one year.  A full list of statutory qualifications and restrictions is available at https://policy.azsba.org/asba/browse/bullhead/bullhead/BBBA.  BCSD boundaries include all of Bullhead City and a sizable portion of surrounding unincorporated area north and east of the city.  District boundaries for board eligibility are posted at https://resources.mohave.gov/file/SchoolSuperintendent/SchoolDistrictsWAVE_JTED25x36_2021.pdf .
