LAKE HAVASU CITY – From preschool through high school graduation, schools all over the United States have developed clubs, activities, and programs outside of classroom curriculums. Everything from athletics, music, drama clubs, and student government, are normally the extracurricular activities to ensure that students can build character and become well rounded individuals.
But what about American Patriotism? In 2010, Lake Havasu residents Diane Klostermeier and Bill McMahon, took the initiative to create Patriotic Americans for Constitutional Education (PACE) for students to learn more about the history of the United States and become enthusiastic about the facts that have made America what it is today.
A member of the Lake Havasu Republican Women’s group, Klostermeier was well known throughout the community as a strong advocate for American patriotism. In 2017, she presented an appreciation certificate to Mayor Cal Sheehy and council members for supporting and recognizing PACE by providing grants, assemblies, and tours throughout our local schools.
Eventually the programs became a nonprofit organization, and almost fifteen years later, Lake Havasu schools ranging from grade schools, middle schools, and high school, continue to hold PACE after school programs that are still going strong with eight participating schools. Currently, there are fourteen PACE instructors who dedicate their time to educate students with fun informative activities. PACE provides engaging activities where students can actively participate in learning about patriotism through creating stage plays, learning to sing patriotic songs, and creating artwork.
The programs are active from January to April. Early May is when PACE holds their annual ceremony at Lake Havasu High School. Teachers and students gather together with presentations to showcase what they have learned within those four months. Marine Veterans are present for American flag folding, and high schoolers who have actively participated in the program are awarded academic scholarships for college. Starting your own PACE after school program in your own area is easy. Simply contact PACE Teacher Liaison Karen Vanderjagt at 928-486-3983, who can provide assistance and help you get started. PACE wants to instill in the youths of Lake Havasu about our nation’s founding fathers, a love of God, and American patriotism.
