MOHAVE COUNTY – There are several new laws which took effect in Arizona Saturday, September 14, and among them one stands out. Governor Katie Hobbs signed into law House Bill 2081 which is the Human Composting law. Yes, as of today it is now legal to compost the dead in Arizona. The state of Arizona has legalized a burial alternative known as NOR: Natural Organic Reduction, which is Human composting.
The process involves placing Human remains in a temperature controlled vessel with organic materials including straw, alfalfa, and woodchips. Then special bacteria, fungi, and protozoa are introduced to help break down the body into ‘Nutrient rich soil.’
The result is a compost residue that can be used to aid in growing trees and plants.
The Governor signed the bill into law back in April of this year and it is now in effect. If interested in this process, contact your local funeral director or reach out to the state offices in your area for details on the process.
