Fair Association Chairman Jerry McGuire has thanked Mohave County Supervisors for allowing the group to host the annual County Fair that concluded Sunday. The Board previously delayed its planned takeover of the facility leased by the Association, allowing the organization to complete events on the 2021 calendar.

McGuire told Supervisors during their Monday Board meeting that this year’s Fair could be the biggest in county history, but that he doesn’t yet have financial or attendance data to share. “I think we owe you all a big thank you for your help and support on having this event,” McGuire said.

County Manager Sam Elters told Supervisors he authorized critical facility fixes just ahead of the Fair for public safety and liability protection. A contractor will be paid more than $10,000 for replacing 43 fluorescent lighting fixtures in the exhibit arenas and addressing other lighting and electrical dangers in the livestock pens and show arena.

Risk and Emergency Management Director Byron Steward told Supervisors other public safety and liability issues should be addressed before the county takeover at year’s end. He said a burned shed needs to be cleared and that the trailer used as an on-site office must also be removed from the property.

Board Chairman Buster Johnson expressed concern about expenditures. Elters explained the county should be made whole given a reimbursement clause in the contract allowing the Association to operate the Fairgrounds until Dec. 31.
