BULLHEAD CITY – The Bullhead City Police and Fire Departments will hold the annual Walk Away from Drugs and 5K run on Wednesday, October 23rd to celebrate Red Ribbon Week.
This year’s event will now feature a Poster Contest, giving young artists the opportunity to show off their talents while also taking a stand against drugs. This poster contest component will help us convey our event’s drug prevention significance and also give children a chance to get creative with anti-drug messaging!
Walk and 5K run participants will gather at Ken Fovargue Park, 2255 Trane Road, at around 4:30 p.m. The event will begin at 5 p.m. with the 5K runners and walkers will immediately follow. No pre-registration is necessary, and the event is free! Medals will be awarded to the 5K first place female, male, and under 18 runners.
Posters must be shown in person to the judges table from 4 – 4:30 p.m. Entrants will then proudly walk with their posters during the Walk Away from Drugs and winners will be announced right after the event concludes.
The Red Ribbon campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program nationwide. The campaign began in 1985 when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena. This incident started the tradition to display and wear red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance toward the use of drugs. We encourage all participants to wear red and hold signs or banners to show their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.
ROUTES:
The 5K (3.1 mile) run route will start at Ken Fovargue Park, go south on Trane Rd, west on Marina Blvd, north on Lakeside Dr, east on Hancock Rd, south on Highway 95, west on Marina Blvd, north on Trane Rd and finish back at Ken Fovargue Park.
The 1.5 mile walk will start after the 5K run from Ken Fovargue Park, go south on Trane Rd, west on Marina Blvd, north on Highland Rd, east on Hancock Rd, south on Trane Rd and finish back at Ken Fovargue Park.
