Thank you for reading The Standard newspaper online!

The report card and ‘fake news’

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

First, I want to thank Glenn Mollette for giving recognition to the women of the church and their dedication and worthiness of any position held in service to God and church congregations. An opinion he shared that many faithful God loving people agree with and apprieciate and was worth reading. All points of views with good intentions are worthy in God’s eyes.

Second, because particular stories in the Bible have remained close to my heart over the years the typo made in a previous op letter I wrote regarding ‘King Cyrus’ needs noting: He was Persian – not Russian – a Muslim who showed compassion for the Israelites.

Emphasizing on the importance of respecting each other’s religious and cultural differences.

And, with that said, while we all make typos from time to time or a misquote we try to correct when we can. Like what I called an amusing Freudian slip with the “Dump Trump” and the paper corrected it. And that’s what responsible people do especially if it’s a big slip up. But not Donald Trump. He just runs with it even when most know it’s a lie. Which brings me to the cartoon in The Standard when the boy is questioned by his mother about his failing report card and he called it, “Fake News.”

Which is the running joke about Trump … it’s all about fake news. Saying ‘affordability’ is fake and a Democrat ‘made up word’ while childishly calling them “Dumocrats” when even his own voters say affordability is an issue but then he calls them liars too. And Trump only makes himself look further out of touch trying to kill the housing bill – he called it ‘a big yawn’ – while folks are struggling he’s spending our tax money like a kid in a candy shop.

His pet projects up in the billions while he wants over $8 billion more for a war he started. A war Trump is losing with Iran no different than his war with algae that went from $2 million to $14 million that keeps going up with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool – not needed – improvement that turned into a puke-green. Some calling it a metaphor for everything going wrong under Trump’s leadership. And like everything else he’s scapegoating by blaming ‘vandals with boxcutters.’

When it’s the botched job of a long-time Trump loyalist and political donor that Trump claimed was the best of the best yet lets him walk away with millions of taxpayer dollars leaving the Reflection Pool a disgusting mess and an eyesore with floating dead ducks. But this is what crony capitalism and habitual lying will get you. He lied when he said the Epstein files are fake and the victims are fake and his sexual abuse and 34 felony convictions are fake and him stealing thousands of classified government documents is fake and news reporters and journalists and news media and the political polls they’re all fake.

Including those who protest against his radical policies, they too are fake. Trump even tried to call the Jan 6th attack on our Capitol fake but rather it a ‘love feast.’

Yes he’s a con artist and a liar but not that good of one. Yet he thinks he is and our country is suffering for it. To quote the recent passing of actress Anne Schedeen who played the mother on the ‘80s sitcom, Alf, with the iconic line, ‘no problem’ my kids picked up and used often.

Schedeen frequently used social media to express her disapproval of Trump calling him ‘the worst of the worst’ and a ‘blight’ on the GOP, the country and the world. In some of her final public posts she wrote, “Trump is off his rails, citizens,” urging officials to “retire this man before it’s too late.”

With that said we all can agree that with great power comes great responsibility, and Trump is failing us.

Like the cartoonist had indicated he’s like the student with the failed report card. However stupid and ridiculous it makes him look he uses over and over again his two favorite words “fake news.”

Regardless of the damage it does to his credibility and that of the Republican Party.

J.M.
