Sexual assault case against Lake Havasu man dropped after hung jury

Interior of courtroom

LAKE HAVASU CITY — There will be no second trial for a Lake Havasu City man whose first trial ended in a hung jury. Deputy Mohave County Attorney Leah Nelson has dismissed the criminal case involving Nathaniel Trujillo, 22.

Nelson told a Mohave County Superior Court jury that Trujillo pulled a 15-year-old girl into a bedroom and sexually assaulted her at a youth drinking party at a home on Sombrero Drive in April, 2023.

The jury informed Judge Megan McCoy it was unable to reach unanimous verdicts after some six hours of deliberation on Jan. 16. Nelson subsequently dismissed the case during a Jan. 22 status conference.

“The case is over,” Nelson said, in response to inquiry after the hearing. She said some jurors told her they think a second trial would produce the same result.

Defense attorney Bob Heieck was unavailable for comment.
