Sen. Mark Kelly visits Kingman; attends Veteran Villas grand opening

KINGMAN – U.S. senator Mark Kelly of Arizona spent several hours in Kingman Wednesday, meeting local leaders and Mohave Community college representatives. Kelly said he learned more about Kingman’s infrastructure and education needs and that he can put the information to use for local constituents when he returns to Washington D.C.

Kelly attended an afternoon ribbon cutting celebrating a collaborative effort and successful housing development project for veterans. He told the crowd of more than 100 people who attended the sweltering outdoor ceremony that he is super impressed with the Kingman Veteran Villas, located at Hualapai Mountain Road and Jackson.

“I hope that other cities in our great state and the rest of our country can look at this project and look at this as a model in how you do this and how you support veterans,’’ the senator said. He said needy veterans are now benefiting from a collaboration that involved the Veteran’s Administration, the Arizona Department of Housing, the Mohave County Housing Authority and Adams Construction in the private sector.

Each of the 48 condominium units features 930 sq. ft. of living space and a single vehicle garage.

Kelly spoke proudly of his 25 years of military service in the Air Force and at NASA.

“I know first-hand what it means to serve our country and the sacrifices that veterans make, not only the veterans, but their families as well,” Kelly said. “Our mission here is never over until every veteran has the care and the support that they’ve earned through their service.”

Kelly said his work on the Senate Armed Services Committee is important for the state and region.

“Here in Arizona we have a proud tradition of supporting our military and supporting our veterans. We’ve got 7 major military installations,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons why it was really important to me to serve on the Committee to make sure that our national security and

national defense is supported, and also make sure that the military installations and the veterans and the active-duty military reserve national guard have the resources they need to do their jobs.”
