Santa James honored with key to city and Unity Award

An elderly, legally blind man who sports a white beard, wears Santa Claus attire and shuffles around the city of Kingman appearing hopelessly homeless was honored during Tuesday’s city council meeting.  Mayor Jen Miles presented James Zyla, also known as “Santa James”, with a key to the city and the community’s first Unity Award.

Miles noted that Zyla’s unique story is chronicled in a feature article published earlier this month by the L.A. Times. The piece noted Zyla’s previous involvement in acting in Hollywood and his passion for poetry and music, but that his accomplishments were unknown to many who ignored him as he slowly wandered streets after arriving in Kingman five years ago.

“And yet if you stopped to talk with him you found him a person who offered intellect, a quick wit and a very positive nature which he shares abundantly,” Miles said at the council meeting. “As our police chief (Bob) Devries has said, Santa James has been adopted as our community grandfather.”

Zyla is a talented pianist who performs once a week at the Canyon 66 Restaurant and Lounge in exchange for use of a motel room. Zyla makes karaoke appearances around town and also performs at the Gourmet Room at Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino.

Miles said many residents who’ve helped Zyla with food, lodging and other necessities feel that Santa James has more than reciprocated with his charm and wisdom. “It’s been quite a journey for Santa James and Kingman,” she said.

Zyla expressed his appreciation for the recognition. He spoke of his wish for a performing art center for Kingman and a piano bar internet podcast to share his music before he was guided to his seat while the meeting continued.
