BOULDER CITY, Nevada – As people head out to explore the outdoors this weekend, park officials are asking visitors to plan ahead for the high temperatures.
“Temperatures are rising around the Las Vegas Valley, if you are headed out for a hike or a bike ride please bring plenty of water along for you, your family and those furry friends,” said Superintendent Margaret L. Goodro.
One of the popular locations within the park is the Historic Railroad Trail. The 7.5-mile-round-trip National Recreation Trail leads hikers through five historic railroad tunnels that were used during the construction of the Hoover Dam.
People can also hike four miles roundtrip to Lake Mead. The two miles back to the car are the hardest, uphill with no shade, no restrooms and no water. Park Rangers are asking folks to keep in mind the heat and the hills before traveling too far from your cars. Consider hiking and biking in the mornings when the temperatures are cooler.
Tips to consider when visiting the outdoors.

- Bring plenty of water for you and your pets.
- Use sunscreen for you and your family.
- The ground is much hotter than the air; protect your pet’s paws.
- Bring hand sanitizer and wipes. Picnic tables and fishing piers are not sanitized.
- Restrooms may be closed. Go before you visit or be prepared to take out your own waste.
PROTECT
- Maintain 6 ft (2 m) social distance from others
- Only park in designated areas.
- Stay on marked trails.
- Pack out everything you bring in.
- Respect closures and closed areas.
