Romero gets 8.5 years for ‘death-by-cop’ attempt

KINGMAN – A Kingman man shot by a local policeman while brandishing a shotgun 11 months ago was given an 8.5-year prison term Monday, Nov. 25. The punishment was mandated in a plea agreement convicting Andrew Romero, 40, of a charge reduced to attempted aggravated assault.

Police sergeant Kenneth Morris and officer Daniel Wright responded last Dec. 29 to a report of a domestic disturbance at a home in the 1700 block of Golden Gate. Ave.

Chief Deputy Mohave County Attorney James Schoppmann said Romero’s significant other and a toddler exited the residence before Romero came outside possessing a loaded and fully functional shotgun in a threatening manner. Romero survived a gunshot to the chest from Morris who fired in self-defense.

Schoppmann said Romero challenged the officers in a failed “suicide by cop” attempt.

“I am very sorry. I’m normally a generally law-abiding citizen,” Romero told Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle. “I really have no excuse for my actions, I just wish I could remember them.”

Romero explained he was highly intoxicated at the time of the incident.
