Who we are
The Standard is a locally owned news publication serving Mohave County, Arizona, family owned and operated since 1990. Our website address is https://thestandardnewspaper.online.
This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and what we do with it. It covers both our website and The Standard mobile app for iPhone. Where the two differ we say so — the app collects considerably less than the website does.

Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor's IP address and browser user agent string, which help us detect spam.
An anonymized string created from your email address (a "hash") may be provided to the Gravatar service to see whether you are using it. The Gravatar privacy policy is at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside your comment.
Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely so that we can recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically rather than holding them for moderation each time.
Media
If you upload images to the website, please avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors to the website can download and extract location data from images published on the site.
Forms, letters and classified ad submissions
If you contact us through a form on the website — a letter to the editor, a classified ad submission, a news tip, or a general enquiry — we collect the information you choose to put in that form, which usually includes your name and email address and may include your phone number and mailing address.
We use that information only to respond to you and to publish what you asked us to publish. Letters to the editor and classified advertisements are submitted for publication, and by sending them you are asking us to publish them. We do not add form submissions to a marketing list without your consent.
Print subscriptions and payments
If you purchase a print subscription through our website, payment is processed by PayPal. We do not receive or store your full card number. PayPal handles the transaction and its own privacy policy applies to the information you give it: https://www.paypal.com/us/legalhub/privacy-full.
We keep the information we need to fulfil and service your subscription — your name, mailing address, contact details, and a record of what you bought and when — for as long as you are a subscriber and afterwards for as long as our tax and business records require.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when leaving another comment. These cookies last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. It contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
If you log in, we set several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last two days and screen option cookies last a year. If you select "Remember Me", your login persists for two weeks. Logging out removes the login cookies.
We also use cookies set by the analytics service described in the next section.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how our website is used — which stories are read, how visitors arrive, and which pages are not working well. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects information including your IP address, the pages you view, the approximate region you are in, and the type of device and browser you use.
This information is processed by Google. Google's privacy policy is at https://policies.google.com/privacy, and you can opt out of Google Analytics across all sites using Google's browser add-on at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
We use analytics to improve our reporting and our website. We do not use it to identify individual readers by name.
The mobile app does not use Google Analytics or any other analytics service.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content such as videos, images, social media posts and our e-Edition reader. Embedded content from other websites behaves in exactly the same way as if you had visited that other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with it if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
The Standard mobile app
This section applies to The Standard app for iPhone. It is written to match exactly what the app does.
You do not need an account. You can read everything in the app without signing up, signing in, or giving us your name, email address or phone number. We do not ask for them and we do not store them.
We do not ask for device permissions. The app does not request access to your location, contacts, photos, camera, microphone or health data.
We do not track you across other apps or websites. The app contains no advertising network software and no third-party analytics or tracking software of any kind. We do not use the Advertising Identifier (IDFA), and the app will not ask you to allow tracking, because it does not track.
We do not sell or share personal information from the app, because we do not collect any.
Advertising measurement. The app records how many times each advertisement is shown and how many times one is tapped. These are running totals per advertisement. They are not linked to you, your device, or any identifier, and we cannot tell which reader saw or tapped a given advertisement. We use these totals for one purpose: to tell the local businesses who advertise with us how their advertising performed.
Tapping an advertisement opens that business's own website. What that business does with your information is governed by its privacy policy, not ours.
Content and weather. Stories, photographs and e-Editions are downloaded from our website. Weather conditions shown in the app are retrieved from Open-Meteo (https://open-meteo.com), a weather data service. Official watches and warnings shown in the app come from the National Weather Service (weather.gov), a United States government service. As with loading any web page, these providers may record technical information such as your device's IP address in their own server logs. We do not receive that information.
Saved reading data, such as articles you bookmark, is stored on your device. It is not sent to us. Deleting the app removes it.
Who we share your data with
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing.
We share information only with the service providers we need in order to operate:
- Google Analytics, for website traffic measurement (website only)
- PayPal, to process subscription payments
- Our web host, which stores the website and its database
- Open-Meteo, which supplies weather data to the app
- The National Weather Service (weather.gov), which supplies official watches and warnings shown in the app
We may also disclose information where the law requires it, such as in response to a valid subpoena or court order, or where necessary to protect our legal rights or the safety of others.
If you request a password reset on the website, your IP address is included in the reset email.
How long we retain your data
- Comments and their metadata: retained indefinitely, so follow-up comments can be approved automatically.
- Registered website users: we store the personal information provided in the user profile. Users can see, edit or delete their information at any time, except that they cannot change their username. Site administrators can also see and edit that information.
- Form submissions (letters, classified ads, enquiries): kept as long as needed to respond and to keep a record of what we published.
- Subscription records: kept for the life of the subscription and afterwards as long as our tax and business records require.
- Analytics data: retained according to our Google Analytics settings.
- App advertising totals: retained as running monthly counts. These contain no personal information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided. You can also ask us to erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal or security purposes.
Because the mobile app does not collect personal information, there is nothing for us to export or delete in connection with app use.
To make a request, contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.
Arizona and United States residents
We are an Arizona business and this policy is governed by Arizona law. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under your own state's privacy laws, including the right to know what personal information is collected about you, the right to request deletion, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If you believe you have rights under another state's law, contact us and we will respond as that law requires.
Children's privacy
Our website and app are general-audience news publications. They are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the information we hold, including serving our website and app content over encrypted connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle information, we will update this policy and change the "Last updated" date at the top. If the change is significant, we will say so on our website. Continuing to use our website or app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
