It was nearly four years ago when the community first learned of plans to build a Perkins Restaurant and Bakery in Kingman. Those involved made it clear that construction wouldn’t likely begin until late 2017 or 2018 at the project site between Interstate 40 and the rear of the new Safeway shopping complex.
The city approved plans for the 5,258 square-foot eatery that can seat up to 257 people. However, the project is shelved, at least temporarily, and it’s fate is uncertain.
“It’s on indefinite hold,” said Brett Borg, the President of the company that manages the Safeway plaza property. Borg said the project is shelved for now, mostly due to coronavirus uncertainty.
“A lot of it also has to do with construction costs that have skyrocketed over the last two years. Had we chosen to build right away it would be done,” Borg said. “I’m still optimistic it will happen. I still think the location is phenomenal.”
Borg said plans to build a 2,000 square-foot Riliberto’s, free-standing drive thru on a parking lot pad at Safeway is also stalled for now. But he thinks the Mexican outlet will be built and opened for business.
“I think with that one it’s not a matter of ‘if’. It’s more ‘when’ on that one. It’s just been delayed,” Borg said.
I’m praying it will happen very soon, I cant wait.
