KINGMAN. – The mask proclamation will be on the September 15, City Council meeting agenda, in order for the full council to vote on the item.
Kingman Mayor Jen Miles said, “As COVID-19 cases and deaths surged in July, Mayors of about 90% of Arizona cities issued face covering mandates. Combined with the Governor’s Executive Orders designed to slow the spread, the state and county have seen dramatic decreases in the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths. On September 3, Mohave County actually was designated a “moderate” zone by Arizona Department of Health Services business benchmarks, allowing previously closed businesses to partially reopen. The protective measures are working but it is not time to do a ‘victory lap.’ We have additional risk factors entering the fall season such as schools reopening and flu season. We need to maintain our vigilance and our protective measures.”
Mayor Miles further said, “The city’s mask proclamation has made a difference in improving health outcomes. Importantly, it supports other institutions that are now applying their own mask requirements including our schools, businesses and healthcare community.”
Recently, the mayor extended the proclamation that requires people to wear a face covering over their nose and mouth whenever they are patrons of businesses within the City of Kingman, through Thursday, December 31, 2020. “However, we have a diverse community; there has been an outcry from those who disagree with any mandate to wear masks and/or the Mayor’s authority to issue it. Therefore, we will be taking the proclamation to City Council on September 15 for ratification. I hope that the Council will consider the positive results we are experiencing and will ratify the proclamation. It carries on the prioritization of public health during this crisis as well as the importance of maintaining continuity in protective measures with our partners throughout the city and county,” said Mayor Miles.
The original proclamation went into effect Wednesday, July 1, at 1 a.m. and would have expired this Sunday, August 30. It requires every person in the City of Kingman, ages six and over to cover their nose and mouth whenever they enter places of business that serve the public
