Man arrested for Thanksgiving homicide in Dolan Springs

DOLAN SPRINGS — The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) reports an arrest in a Thanksgiving homicide in Dolan Springs. Deputies responded at 9:46 p.m. on November 27 to a welfare check request associated with a residence in the 12000 block of N. Round Island Road.

“The reporting party had returned home to the property to find a male subject on the ground that had possibly been shot,” said MCSO public information specialist Anita Mortensen. “Deputies arrived to find the victim had at least one gunshot wound and had no signs of life.”

Arriving medical personnel pronounced Timothy Terry, 52, dead at the scene. Investigation revealed that Terry moved into the residence about two weeks before he was killed.

“Multiple subjects live in multiple structures on the property and all advised they were not present when the victim was shot,” Mortensen said. She said a man and woman visited the MCSO in Kingman the day after the shooting, wanting to report an assault prior to the shooting.

Mortensen said the male subject identified as James Counts, 37, Dolan Springs, said the female subject visited the property on foot to retrieve some items and that he pulled up in a vehicle to pick her up to provide a ride.

“A physical altercation ensued between Counts and the victim,” Mortensen said. “Counts then alleged that he fired a warning shot into the ground before firing the weapon towards the victim.”

Counts and the woman left the scene by vehicle before he was arrested the next day in Kingman.

Counts was booked into the Adult Detention Facility on a second degree murder charge.
