LAKE HAVASU CITY – The Lake Havasu Literacy Council will be giving away free books for grades kindergarten to eighth grade. On Thursday, Nov. 2, the Literacy Council will be giving away free books from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Mohave County Library – Lake Havasu City branch. This event is an opportunity to meet Literacy Council volunteers and pick up some great reads. City Council members will be visiting as well to show their support for this free event.
The Workplace Education and Literacy Coalition of Mohave County estimated that 13% of individuals over the age of 16, lack basic literacy skills. The effects of this can lead to lack of economic stability, health, and financial security.
The Literacy Council is part of The Workplace Education and Literacy Coalition of Mohave County. Their mission is to support literacy needs for adults and children. The nonprofit organization has motivated volunteers and contributors of their cause to create access to unique courses for each literacy student and needs of the community.
The Literacy Council is the main contact for the literacy providers of Mohave County. They coordinate correspondence with coalition, literacy agencies, and employers. The group provides referrals needed to help those in need of their service.
The council provides many free services all for the sake of improving literacy in the area. Little free libraries is a book exchange effort which is just one of the many ways the organization helps the public gain an interest in reading. They also provide free online help.
The brain fuse live online tutoring lessons help children from elementary all the way to college. Their program also provides tools for job seekers, citizenship testing, GED tutoring. Another free online service is their learning express library adult core skills.
Not only does this service help with reading, but also writing and math. Their at-home service is designed for families looking to improve reading skills at home in just six weeks.
Director of the Literacy Council Sandy Robbins says that her favorite part about being with the organizations is hearing from her students about their progress.
