Laughlin, Bullhead City announce six-month America’s 250th birthday celebration

LAUGHLIN/BULLHEAD CITY –  In preparation for the United States Semiquincentennial, a dedicated committee of civic leaders from Laughlin, Nevada, and Bullhead City, Arizona, has spent the past five months developing a powerful and collaborative celebration of America’s 250th Birthday and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Thanks to a generous America250 grant from the Nevada Division of Tourism – Travel Nevada, awarded to the Laughlin Tourism Commission, this regionally coordinated celebration will span six months in 2026, uniting Nevada and Arizona through monthly family-friendly events that honor America’s founding values. The campaign has proudly adopted the theme: “Where the River Runs Red, White and Blue.” This identity will carry throughout the Semiquincentennial — and serve as a lasting tribute to the spirit of the Colorado River communities.

The celebration’s digital presence and branding went public January 15, with the unveiling of their website (theriver250.com), an official facebook page (facebook.com/theriver250), an event logo, and a specially commissioned illustrated souvenir T-shirt image.

First Community Event: Regional Student Essay Contest

The first community event will invite students on both sides of the river to participate in The River 250 Essay and Art Contest. Youth will submit an art piece or essay up to 500 words reflecting on freedom, unity, and the meaning of America250 through February 11.

Essays will be judged anonymously, with cash prizes sponsored by the former Laughlin Bullhead Air Show Foundation and community recognition awarded in a public ceremony in March 2026.  Guidelines and judging rubric can be found at www.TheRiver250.com.

Monthly Events Along the River

From January to July, residents and visitors can expect monthly events in both Laughlin and Bullhead City — each reflecting the shared commitment to history, education, community pride, and celebration.

Event highlights will include interactive storytelling and live historical reenactments of key American milestones, heritage exhibits and educational programs, water-based recreation and demonstration events, vendor villages and food truck festivals, spectator and participatory programs for all ages, and limited-edition souvenir apparel, including the official TheRiver250 T-shirt, hats and stickers.

All events will reflect the cross-border collaboration between Nevada and Arizona — showcasing the unity, resilience, and joy of the people who live, work, and celebrate together along the Colorado River.

“This will be a once-in-a-generation celebration,” said a committee spokesperson. “And no one honors heritage and hospitality like the residents and visitors of The River.”
