KINGMAN, Ariz. — Kingman Regional Medical Center is expanding its robotic surgical service line with the addition of two Intuitive da Vinci 5 surgical systems, the newest and most advanced robotic-assisted surgery technology available. The first da Vinci 5 arrived last week and was used in its first case on Monday, Oct. 26. The second robotic system is expected later in the year.
The new da Vinci 5 robotic systems, which totaled more than $5 million, will replace KRMC’s current da Vinci XI surgical system, in use since January 2023. The upgrade could allow KRMC to expand into additional surgical specialties. The da Vinci 5 technology advances comes from more than a decade of research and development and is built upon the clinical and operational value from more than 14 million procedures that have been performed using various generations of da Vinci technology.
“The da Vinci 5 system expands the robotic-assisted surgery program at KRMC.” said Heath Evans, CEO, Kingman Regional Medical Center. “Our physician partners have developed and grown the program to the point that we are able to update and expand our robotic technology to offer our patients one of the most advanced surgical options available today.”
Da Vinci 5 is Intuitive’s most advanced and integrated platform; with significant technology advances to transform surgery, enhanced precision, and help improve patient outcomes and efficiency. Da Vinci 5 is designed to allow surgeons to feel more and see more. With the addition of the minimally invasive da Vinci 5 surgical systems, KRMC patients should expect to experience faster recovery times, fewer complications, less blood loss, and a faster return to normal activities.
With more than 150 new design innovations, da Vinci 5 expands upon core da Vinci system features, including wristed instruments, 3DHD visualization, intuitive motion, and an ergonomic design. As with all da Vinci surgical systems, the surgeon is 100 percent in control of the robotic-assisted da Vinci system, which translates the surgeon’s hand movements into smaller, more precise reactions of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. Key enhancements to the da Vinic 5 include:
- First-of-its-kind force-sensing feedback technology, which can reduce the amount of force on tissue. This advancement enables surgeons to better sense and measure the force exerted on tissue during surgery
- Optimized vision with truer colors, higher image resolution, and the most realistic da Vinci next generation 3D image
- Design and engineering enhancements, including new surgeon controllers and powerful vibration and tremor controls, making it the smoothest and most precise system Intuitive has developed.
- Better ergonomics for the surgeon and improved surgical viewing
- More than 10,000 times the computing power of da Vinci Xi to deliver actionable insights
“By accentuating the precision, dexterity and control of a surgeon’s skills, the da Vinci 5 surgical system helps to redefine the standards of care for robot-assisted surgical procedures,” said Drew Albricht, DO, a KRMC general surgeon at Mohave Surgical Specialist. “In comparison to traditional surgical options, patients who have surgery assisted by the da Vinci 5 robot may experience reduced trauma to the body, less post-operative pain, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster recovery period.”
