Kingman implements telematics system for garbage trucks

KINGMAN –The Kingman City Council recently approved the purchase of a new telematics management system for the City’s Solid Waste Division, enhancing fleet safety, efficiency, and operational oversight. As part of a three-year contract with Routeware Inc., the city has ordered GPS vehicle tracking and camera systems for ten refuse trucks, covering half of its fleet, to assess the system’s effectiveness before potential full-scale implementation.
The Routeware management solution includes hardware, software, and data tracking capabilities that will allow the city to monitor vehicle performance, optimize routes, and verify incidents in real-time. With the addition of forward-facing cameras, the system will provide critical footage to review accidents.  “This investment is about making our operations more efficient and prioritizing safety,” said Rob Owen, the City’s Public Works Director.  “The ability to review footage after an accident will help us understand what happened and find ways to better protect both our drivers and residents.”
The three-year contract with Routeware Inc. is through the City of Tucson’s cooperative purchasing agreement.  This purchase was approved in the Fiscal Year 2024-25 Adopted Budget and is included in the City’s 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan. The first year’s contract will be totaling $30,979.60 plus tax. The second and third years will each cost $20,979.60 plus tax, funded through the Solid Waste Fund.
