John Joseph Carroll was born in Philadelphia, Penn., on April 28, 1974 to Claire Quinn Crum and John A. Carroll, Jr. He died unexpectedly on May 26, 2023. At an early age, his family moved to Kingman, AZ. He graduated from Kingman High School in 1992. This was also where he met his wife, Penni Rae Walls. They married in 1997 and moved to Winnemucca, Nev., to start their new life, where their children, Brenden Joseph, and Brooks deChantel were born.
John spent his entire career in gold mining. He took great pride in his participation in Mine Rescue, the underground mining version of the First Responder and Search and Rescue. He was successful against other mines in competitions around the country. John was so proud of his underground knowledge of safety and proper protection of his mining comrades. He was known by the nickname “Creature” by his underground workmates.
John was passionate about golfing, mountain biking, arcade games, and skateboarding. He loved Chuck Taylor high tops, the color green, punk music, and Calvin and Hobbes.
John was predeceased by his wife, Penni Rae Carroll, his father, John A. Carroll, Jr., and his brother, Joseph Bromley Carroll. He is survived by his children, Brenden (Josie) and Brooks, his mother, Claire Crum (Gregory), his sisters, Maria Kaufman (Kent), Andrea Fowers (Shane), Noelle Frye (Eric), Brooks Bromley McKinley (Tony), and Denise Bungum (Matthew), and partner, Cristy Alvarado Weum, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews who all adored him.
John had an amazing and engaging personality with a thoughtful heart, and he was an all-around great guy. He has already been greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
On Saturday, May 25, 2024, we will celebrate John’s life in Kingman, Ariz., in the Hualapai Mountains. We will meet at Rec Area #2 at 2 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. Please bring your favorite memory and story to this celebration to honor one of our favorite people. Refreshments will be served. In John’s honor, this will be a non-alcoholic event.
