Investigation underway following fatal officer-involved shooting

MOHAVE COUNTY – The Bullhead City police department is conducting an independent investigation of a fatal officer-involved-shooting in Lake Havasu City. The practice is customary, as is the paid administrative leave of the two officers involved while the deadly gunfire exchange is under review.

The drama began unfolding about noon Wednesday when a Mohave County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to serve an order of protection on 39-year-old Ronald Chipman at his home in the 3300 block of Pocahontas Drive.

“Chipman reportedly pointed a weapon at the deputy and additional law enforcement were called for assistance,” said Bullhead City police spokeswoman Emily Fromelt. “Chipman barricaded himself inside his residence and refused to comply with officers’ commands.”

County and city officers and SWAT teams arrived and communication efforts and Chipman reportedly made several irrational statements.

“The investigation has revealed that after several hours, Chipman fired multiple shots at officers from within his residence,” Fromelt said. “Lake Havasu City police officers returned fire, injuring the suspect.”

No officers or other civilians were hurt. Chipman died following transport to Havasu Regional Medical Center.
