How to overcome the fear of public speaking

public speaking

KINGMAN — According to a study by the University of Florida, more than 70 percent of people are uncomfortable speaking in public. An additional 30 percent have glassophobia, a very real fear of public speaking.

Why is there so much anxiety around public speaking? Because people have no place to practice! How can you conquer your fear of public speaking if you do not practice?

The best place to practice public speaking is in a speaking club. You not only improve your public speaking skills, but your communication skills as well. What are the other benefits of joining a speaking club? You are among friends who are also working towards improving their speaking skills. You will receive guidance on how to improve. The skills you learn can be applied outside the club.

Most people want a quick fix on getting better at public speaking, like reading a book on the topic, or attending a workshop. That may help, but it does not get rid of the anxiety. What does help is regular practice. With practice, anxiety will diminish over time. The key to conquering that anxiety is through practicing weekly and getting feedback on ways to improve. Now, are you ready to conquer your fear and become a better you? Then join a speaking club today! There is one in Kingman, Legacy Speakers of Kingman.

Legacy Speakers of Kingman meets every Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Kingman Regional Medical Center, 3269 Stockton Hill Rd. For information call 909-252-7115 or legacyspeakersofkingman@gmail.com.
