Havasu crash probe continues

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Intoxication is a factor suspected in the investigation of a vehicle-motorcycle collision that seriously injured a teenager just north of Lake Havasu City. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office reports the crash in the 3100 block of London Bridge Road occurred at about 9:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.

Agency spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said a 16-year-old male was ejected from the motorcycle he was operating when struck by an alleged impaired driver who was traveling in the opposite direction and made a left-hand turn in his path.

“The driver of the SUV, identified as Dennis Michael Chiappetta, showed signs and symptoms of impairment and field sobriety tests were conducted,” Mortensen said. “A breath test later revealed a blood alcohol content of .153% (nearly twice the legal limit).”

The 73-year-old SUV driver was arrested and jailed for driving under the influence.

“The operator of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet and other safety gear, which most likely saved him from more serious injuries,” Mortensen said. She said the teenager was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center where he was initially listed in stable condition.

Investigation continues.
