First observed in 1921 as Americanism day and later renamed Loyalty Day, May 1st was set in order to counter International Workers’ Day and was recognized by the U.S. Congress during the height of the Second Red Scare bucking communism. Since 1955 every U.S. President has proclaimed May 1st as a day to call on Americans to raise their flags, pray and reflect on their heritage. The message for the day speaks of loyalty and freedom in equal measure, especially honoring those who have served in the military.
