Former teacher takes plea deal in criminal case

LEAD Technologies Inc. V1.01

LAKE HAVASU CITY – A former Lake Havasu city school teacher who admits having sex with a teenage runaway will avoid prison under terms of a plea agreement unveiled in Kingman. Robyn Rogers, 44, pleaded guilty Thursday, Aug. 22 to sexual conduct with a minor.

Another sexual conduct with a minor count and a custodial interference charge will be dismissed if Mohave County Superior Court Judge Lee Jantzen approves the plea deal during a Sept. 20 sentencing hearing. Judge Jantzen informed attorneys he wants to read the Probation Department’s pre-sentence report to learn more about the case before ruling on the plea proposal.

Rogers, who is out of custody on bond, appeared for the proceeding along with defense attorney Bob Heieck. She was directed to check in with the probation department after entering her plea.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Marcie Mininberg previously told the Court that the former Telesis Preparatory Academy teacher abused her position of trust to cultivate an illegal relationship with the boy who was a freshman when they first met. Mininberg said Rogers later reconnected with the boy, learning of his troubled home life when he ran away in Feb. at the age of 17.

Lake Havasu City police alleged Rogers several times denied knowing where he was when asked about the boy. The teen was spotted leaving her home in the 1400 block of Beefeater Drive when police arrived for follow-up contact with Rogers on July 18.

Judge Jantzen is required to place the defendant on supervised probation if he approves the plea deal next month. He could still sentence her up to one year in the county jail and impose sex offender registration protocols.
