KINGMAN – Kingman police continue a death investigation associated with a fire at a makeshift dwelling on a rocky hillside in downtown Kingman. A family hiking a pathway within the White Cliffs hiking trail system came across the body of the victim north of where Eighth Street dead ends at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13.

Deputy police chief Joel Freed said it appeared the man was burned when his mattress caught fire. He said investigators determined he escaped the fire scene but fell and sustained further injuries.

Freed said police believe they’ve tentatively identified the victim as a homeless person with whom they’ve had previous involvements. Cause of death and positive identity determinations are pending with the Mohave County Medical Examiner.

Freed said foul play is not suspected.
