MOHAVE COUNTY –The link below is the public website for the GSC Farm to Queen Creek Water Transfer Environmental Assessment (EA). The United States Department of the Interior (DOI), Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) Lower Colorado Basin, Interior Region 8, is the lead federal agency for the preparation of this EA.
This EA is being developed to assess and disclose the potential effects of the proposed transfer of GSC Farm, LLC’s (GSC Farm) Arizona fourth-priority Colorado River water entitlement located in La Paz County, Arizona to the Town of Queen Creek (Queen Creek), located in Maricopa and Pinal counties, Arizona (the Project).
Mohave County officials and most residents vehemently oppose this transfer of our valuable water to Queen Creek, Arizona. Water is akin to gold in our county and this is a transfer of 2,033.01 acre feet per year of GSC Farm’s water entitlement to the Town of Queen Creek. The voice of Mohave County residents is needed to show the depth of opposition to this process.
District 1 Supervisor Travis Lingenfelter is a leader in retaining our valuable water resource. He says, “Our Colorado River Communities are resolutely and unanimously opposed to the Department of Interior and Bureau of Reclamation permitting this proposed Colorado River water transfer 170 miles to the east for the very first time to Central Arizona and the Town of Queen Creek to construct an additional 5,500 homes for a one-time payment of twenty million dollars. It represents a significant transfer of opportunity and wealth away from our Colorado River communities and we will collectively battle against the proposed transfer of this Colorado River water and the enrichment of a hedge fund that is commoditizing Arizona’s water at every opportunity and until the very end.
Supervisor Lingenfelter adds, “I would ask each and every citizen living within Arizona’s Colorado River communities to share their opposition against this proposed water transfer with the Department of Interior by September 24 of this year. From Yuma all the way north up the Colorado River to the Hualapai Tribe, we must unite on this and throw everything we have against this proposed transfer of Colorado River water.”
Please act now and add your strong opposition to thousands of other Mohave County residents. Your comments needed and can make a difference as the decision-making process takes place. Reclamation is the lead federal agency and decision maker for this Project. They must hear from the people who live on the land of this water. Help keep our “gold” in the county.
