CHLORIDE – Now that the weather is cooler the folks in the historic silver mining camp of Chloride are gearing up for their semi-annual All Town Yard Sale. This year the Chloride Chamber of Commerce has scheduled the yard sale for Saturday, September 30 starting at 8 a.m.
Chloride’s friendly folks welcome visitors to browse their yards full of antiques, collectibles, and other goodies at bargain prices. The first stop when you get into Chloride is the famous Bake Sale. This year it’s at the corner of Second Street and Elkhart Avenue. You won’t be able to resist the delicious cakes, cookies, and pastries baked by the talented residents. At the bake sale, visitors can pick up an official yard sale map. Maps are also available at the
Mineshaft Market. Then simply follow the map to each of the sales.
In addition to the yard sales, the High Desert Drifters re-enactment gunfight troupe, will perform old west shoot-outs in Cyanide Springs. Chloride’s Historical Society’s Jim Fritz Museum and Silver Belle Playhouse will also be open. Both buildings are full of vintage photographs and historic memorabilia from Chloride’s glory days. Chloride is the oldest
inhabited silver mining camp in Arizona, founded in the 1860’s. It boasts the oldest continually operated Arizona post office, and a Baptist Church more than 125 years old.
Be sure to check out the numerous shops in town. You will find handmade jewelry, wooden creations, antiques, collectibles, local ore, souvenirs, western art, and survival equipment. For history buffs a must stop are Chloride’s old jail on Merrimac Avenue, and around the corner, the old train station on Schuylkill Avenue. About a mile east of town are the world-famous Roy Purcell Murals, and petroglyphs created by the Hualapai Indians who lived in the area.
The road is primitive so before starting out it’s suggested you ask about road conditions and directions at the Mineshaft Market.
Chloride is located off Highway 93, 23 miles north of Kingman and 80 miles south of Las Vegas. Take Highway 93 to State Route 125, turn east four miles. Watch for Chloride’s billboard and the official Arizona State Visitor sign. For more information call (626) 483-4571 or (928) 565-9777.
