Catholic Charities Switches Focus to Affordable Housing

KINGMAN – The City of Kingman has been working with Catholic Charities of Arizona on their $4.5 million renovation of the Route 66 Motel located at 2939 E. Andy Devine Avenue as part of their Housing for Hope program. The Department of Housing awarded those grant funds to Catholic Charities, with the intent of renovating it into a 20-unit transitional housing facility. The group, along with members of staff from the City of Kingman held a public meeting on November 27, to allow the community and residents of the area to ask questions and get clarification. As a result of that meeting, City staff asked Catholic Charities if they would be able to remove the transitional housing portion of the project and just focus on affordable housing.

The City has received confirmation back from Sandi Flores, Sr. Programs Director that their request to do just that, has been approved by the Arizona Department of Housing. The project will continue to move forward and is designed to provide 20 units of permanent affordable housing to qualifying Kingman residents. Ms. Flores added in her communication to City staff, that the requirements for residents to be experiencing homelessness and having a two-year time limit for the housing will also be removed from the program. She shared that their organization will still maintain an office on site and offer their services to all residents of the complex.
