LAKE HAVASU CITY – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will begin gathering wild burros this week in response to public safety concerns along State Route 95 just north of Lake Havasu City. The BLM will focus gather efforts in areas where burros are impacting local roadways and damaging private property.
The gather will remove approximately 100 wild burros using a bait trap method, which uses food and water to lure the burros into temporary corrals, strategically positioned in the gather area. Animals removed as part of this gather will be transported to the Florence Wild Horse and Burro Training and Off-range Corral, where they will be made available for adoption or purchase through the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption and Sales Program.
Additionally, the BLM is currently working through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process required to implement a longer-term plan within the Lake Havasu, Alamo and Big Sandy Herd Management Areas which may include one or more gathers to remove excess wild burros, strategic deployment of fertility controls, and/or other management activities in the coming years.
