MOHAVE COUNTY – The Mohave College Women’s Soccer team came out on top in a close 3–2 battle against Pima Community College on Thursday night at Firebird Field. The win marks the Bighorns second of the season and their first win at home.
The Bighorns got off to a fast start with two quick goals in the first half. Magaly Guzman-Lopez scored in the 24th minute, and just one minute later Anela Hoohuli added another with help from Estephanie Montiel-Silva.
“We’ve had a great start to the season so far. We have had two wins now, it’s better than we did last year. All of the girls have put hard work and dedication into this so, we deserve these wins. It’s always a team effort, it’s not always just one person, it’s the whole team. I think it’s just the beginning, ” Guzman told the Mohave Daily News in a video interview immediately following the game.
Early in the second half, Guzman-Lopez struck again, this time set up by Karisa Banks and Brianne Kumashiro, giving Mohave a 3–0 lead.
Pima answered back with two goals of their own in the second half, but the Bighorns held strong to secure the victory. Goalkeeper Evelyn Montiel-Silva came up big with 8 saves to help close out the game.
“We fought hard for 90 minutes; we played with a level intensity I haven’t seen before. We played quality soccer, some of the best I’ve seen them play,” Coach Robert Podyen said in the video interview after the game.
The Bighorns now look ahead to a big weekend of soccer at Firebird Field. On Saturday, August 30, the women’s team will face Paradise Valley Community College at 5:30 PM, followed by the men’s game against Paradise Valley at 8 PM. Then on Monday, September 1, the men’s team returns to the field for an 11 AM matchup against Central Wyoming College.
