PHOENIX – Each day, Arizona roadside assistance workers come to the rescue of motorists in need. AAA Arizona extends its gratitude to these dedicated drivers who respond to almost 600,000 calls in Arizona each year. In recognition of their hard work, Governor Katie Hobbs recently proclaimed June 23-29 as Roadside Assistance Worker Appreciation Week.
Summer is the busiest time for AAA’s roadside assistance teams across the country. AAA estimates that it will respond to nearly 800,000 calls for roadside assistance nationwide over the upcoming Fourth of July travel period alone, which is 5 percent more than last year.
“Drivers can show their appreciation for tow truck drivers by adhering to Arizona’s Move Over Law,” said Dan Hutchinson, Chief Roadside Officer for AAA Arizona. “With the busy summer driving season underway, it’s important that we remember to give our roadside heroes the safe space they need to help stranded motorists on the side of the road.”
Arizona’s Move Over law requires drivers to reduce their speed and, when safe, move over to the next lane upon encountering any vehicle with flashing lights pulled to the side of the roadway. Violators face financial penalties.
In recognition of Roadside Assistance Worker Appreciation Week (June 23-29), AAA Arizona encourages drivers to:
- Stay alert, avoid distractions and concentrate on the task of driving.
- Watch for situations where emergency vehicles, tow trucks, public service vehicles, or disabled vehicles on the side of the road.
- Slow down and, if possible, keep one lane away from workers, motorists and their vehicles stranded on the side of the road.
