LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. – A Lake Havasu City man wounded by law enforcement gunfire has been offered a mandatory prison plea agreement. Mohave County Superior Court judge Megan McCoy conducted an Oct. 23 settlement conference to make certain that Maurice Trudell, 60, understands the plea deal and the harsher consequences if convicted at trial.
Lake Havasu City police responding Sept. 25 to a domestic disturbance in the 1100 block of Rolling Hills Drive became engaged in pursuit of a vehicle driven from the scene. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office reported the chase ended when the vehicle driven by Trudell was disabled after striking an embankment in the vicinity of Copper Way and the Ridges Way.
The MCSO said Trudell was shot by an officer after he exited his vehicle brandishing a firearm. Trudell was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Trudell faces up to five years in prison under terms of the proposed plea deal. Judge McCoy informed Trudell he could face more than 23 years in prison if convicted at trial of unlawful flight and aggravated assault involving a first responder.
Trudell has until Nov. 4 to decide to accept the plea offer or take his case to trial.
During prior residency in Bullhead City, Trudell partnered for years with local law enforcement to conduct holiday season bicycle and toy drives for children in Bullhead City and Laughlin.
