Hunter enters plea after attempting to abduct a child

KINGMAN, Ariz. – A Lake Havasu City man accused of attempting to abduct a seven-year-old girl has entered a mandatory probation plea agreement. Richard Hunter, 69, pleaded guilty to attempted custodial interference during an Oct. 6 hearing at the Mohave County Law and Justice Center.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Rod Albright said Hunter was parked outside a laundromat at 121 North Lake Havasu Avenue on July 16 when a pickup truck pulled into the parking space next to his Honda Accord. He said the mom went inside the laundromat when Hunter tried to lure the girl from her sitting position on the tailgate.

“The defendant tried to coax or entice the victim to get in his vehicle by saying ‘come on, get in, let’s go,’” Albright said. Police said the girl protected herself by locking herself in the cab of the pickup truck before Hunter drove away.

Hunter can get up to a year in the county jail and will be placed on probation for up to four years during a Nov. 2 sentencing hearing.
