KINGMAN, Ariz. – Many things were discussed and voted on Tuesday at the Kingman City Council meeting from Kingman Youth Advisory Council (KYAC), Mohave Substance Abuse Prevention Program (MSTEPP), to retention basins. But the most popular was that of Kingman’s 75th anniversary celebration planned for January 21, 2027, downtown on Beale Street.
A new seal was approved by the council to be used in all advertisements and promotions of the event. The main event of the celebration was also approved by council – a drone show with 8 to 10 drones and an ice rink big enough for children and their parents. The city will work with a contractor to leave the ice rink up for a couple of days after the celebration.
The city is also working on having food trucks at the event.
To pay for the celebration which will cost between $22,000 and $35,000, the city will solicit sponsorships up to $5,000.
KYAC gave an updated presentation regarding two positions available that they’re hoping to fill with students from Lee Williams High School.
Chip sealing between Airway Ave. and Rutherford St. was approved.
Also approved was $3,000 from opioid settlement funds for two Kingman youths to attend the MSTEPP Conference in Washington, D.C.
The October Street Drag event was approved using money from the tourism fund.
Kingman Public Works Director Jack Plaunty talked about storm water detention and retention basins. He said Kingman currently has 31 that we have accepted for maintenance – 25 retention basins, which are deeper and six detention basins. New ones, he stated, must be designed to drain in 36 hours maximum. These basins are to protect the city from flooding.
