HRMC to demolish original hospital building, memorial celebration planned

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Havasu Regional Medical Center (HRMC) has announced that demolition of the Skilled Nursing building — the site of the city’s original hospital — is scheduled to begin May 21 and run through May 31. The building, which first opened its doors over 50 years ago, holds a unique place in the history of both the hospital and Lake Havasu City itself.

When the original hospital opened in the 1970s, Lake Havasu City was still a young, emerging community. Robert McCulloch had transformed a stretch of Arizona desert into a master-planned city just years earlier, and the hospital represented one of the most significant milestones in the city’s growth — giving those first pioneering families access to healthcare close to home for the very first time.

Over the decades, that building served generations of patients, families, and healthcare workers who built the foundation of what HRMC is today. From those early beginnings, the hospital has grown into a 152-bed, Joint Commission-accredited regional medical center offering a comprehensive scope of services including open heart surgery, a certified Level III Trauma Center, and most recently, Primary Stroke Center Certification from The Joint Commission.

In recognition of the building’s historical significance, HRMC plans to hold a Memorial Celebration following the completion of demolition. Details will be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the hospital is inviting community members, former patients, and staff — past and present — to share photos, stories, and memories connected to the original hospital. Those submissions may be incorporated into the Memorial Celebration as a tribute to the people and moments that defined HRMC’s earliest years.
