Reminders issued regarding political sign guidelines

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Lake Havasu City reminds political candidates and property owners that political signs must conform to local zoning ordinances and state laws. Political signs are allowed on private property and in all zoning districts, subject to limitations on where they may be placed.

Political signs placed in the public rights-of-way may be placed seventy-one days prior to the election, and all political signs in the right-of-way must be removed within fifteen days after the election to which they refer.  Any sign located in the right-of-way must contain the name, telephone number, or website address of the candidate or campaign committee contact person.  Signs cannot be placed on public utility poles, public buildings, or parks and trees therein. They must also not be placed in any manner that will create a traffic hazard or unsafe conditions for motorists and pedestrians.

Lake Havasu City also requires that no political signs be placed in the City right-of-way within the Sign Free Commercial Tourism, Commercial Resort, and Hotel Zone (see map). Political signs remain allowed on private property within these areas.

Any person or organization planning to erect political signs must first file with the City Clerk a Lake Havasu City Political Signs Notification Form. It is the responsibility of the individual who places the sign to comply with city and state regulations, to maintain the signs, and to remove the campaign signs. If Lake Havasu City identifies a sign violation, staff will contact the responsible party and allow twenty-four hours to correct the issue. If the sign creates a safety hazard, City staff may remove it immediately and then contact the responsible party afterward.
